FAQs

Who is the best person to see for allergies? ›

An allergist is a physician who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of asthma and other allergic diseases.

Should you see an allergist for asthma? ›

Allergies, asthma and immune conditions can affect your daily life and cause serious reactions. An allergist can help you identify allergy or asthma triggers, prescribe treatments to help your symptoms and suggest lifestyle changes to avoid triggers.

Can allergies cause asthma-like symptoms? ›

The chemicals released by your immune system lead to allergy signs and symptoms, such as nasal congestion, runny nose, itchy eyes or skin reactions. For some people, this same reaction also affects the lungs and airways, leading to asthma symptoms.

Where is the best place for people with bad allergies? ›

Cities on the West Coast, such as California, Washington, and Utah, can be better choices for people with allergies. However, allergens are everywhere. Even if you move to an area that is considered better for allergies, you may still have that allergy or develop a new one.

What is the number one doctor recommended allergy medicine? ›

Nasal steroid sprays: Nasal steroid sprays are the top choice for year-round allergies. If you have mild or moderate allergy symptoms year-round, use a nasal spray every day. If you have seasonal allergies and don't want to use a nasal spray every day, start these medicines 2-4 weeks before allergy season.

What kind of doctor is best for asthma? ›

Pulmonologist. You should see a pulmonologist if you have a disease that affects your respiratory system. Your doctor may refer you to a pulmonologist if your asthma symptoms have a more severe cause. A pulmonologist specializes in diseases that affect your lungs, upper airways, thoracic cavity, and chest wall.

What is the best test to confirm asthma? ›

Spirometry. This is the main test doctors generally use to diagnose asthma in people 5 years or older. To help determine how well your lungs are working, you take a deep breath and forcefully breathe out into a tube connected to a spirometer. This records both the amount of air you exhale and how quickly you exhale.

What is the difference between asthma and allergic asthma? ›

It turns out the main difference is the cause of symptoms. For people with allergic asthma, an outdoor or indoor allergen may trigger symptoms. For a person with non-allergic asthma, there may be other triggers. These triggers include smoke, pollutants, exercise, viruses, and many other things.

Which inhaler is best for allergic asthma? ›

Inhaled corticosteroids are the most effective long-term control medicines. These aren't the same as anabolic steroids that people use to grow muscle. They include beclomethasone (Qvar RediHaler), budesonide (Pulmicort Flexhaler), ciclesonide (Alvesco), fluticasone (Flovent HFA), and mometasone (Asmanex Twisthaler).

What is the shot for asthma and allergies? ›

Omalizumab injection is injected subcutaneously (under the skin). When omalizumab is used to treat allergic asthma or nasal polyps or to reduce allergic reactions to food, it is usually injected once every 2 or 4 weeks. You may receive one or more injections, depending on your weight and medical condition.

What is the best treatment for asthma? ›

Inhalers, which are devices that let you breathe in medicine, are the main treatment. Tablets and other treatments may also be needed if your asthma is severe. You'll usually create a personal action plan with a doctor or asthma nurse.

Should I go to an allergist or dermatologist? ›

If you're experiencing skin issues, consider the cause of your symptoms before deciding which specialist to see. A dermatologist is best if your concerns are mostly cosmetic and related to the appearance of your skin, while an allergist is best if you think an allergic reaction might be the cause of your skin issues.

When should you see an immunologist? ›

An immunologist treats health issues brought on by immune system problems. Also known as allergists, immunologists are doctors who diagnose, treat, and work to prevent immune system disorders. You may see an immunologist if you have food or seasonal allergies, hay fever, eczema or an autoimmune disease.

What is the most accurate allergy test? ›

Skin prick testing (SPT) is the preferred testing method for true food allergy. It is safe for most patients—even infants—and it can be done during a regular clinic visit. Results are available immediately after the test, so you will be able to discuss the results with your allergist at the same visit.

What is the difference between an ENT doctor and an allergist? ›

ENT doctors are surgeons who are experts in resolving structural problems involving the head, face, sinuses, nose, throat and voice box. Allergist/immunologists are expert physicians who manage inflammatory (allergic) conditions of the nose, sinuses, ears, throat and lungs without surgery.
