23 -Adm. Louis E. Denfeld, former chief of naval operations, asserted tonight his name will be on the ballot for the Republican gubernatorial nomination in the Sept. 19 primary despite a ruling 'by State Tax Commissioner Henry F. Long that Denfeld has been a Massachusetts resident only since last March.

My eligibility to run for governor has been confirmed by leading legal authorities," Denfeld asserted. It has been definitely established that.I have always been and am now an inhabitant bf Massachusetts. Ruling Blasted, Political Denfeld's campaign manager, Mason Sears, former Republican state chairman, blasted Long's ruling as political. He asserted that Gov. Paul A.

Dever having eliminated Democratic opposition thru the ballot law commission, is now attempting thru Long "to knock out. Adm. Denfeld, who would be his only effective opposition in the election." Two Democrats who filed to run against Dever in the primary were ruled off the ballot because of allegedly deficient nomination papers. Long ruling was given in connection with rejection of 8 check far $954.22 tendered by Denfeld's attorneys for back income taxes, Cites Residence Provision Loug said he had no authority to accept the payment because his records show Denfeld wrote him in 1945 that his legal residence was the state of Washington. The Massachusetts constitution requires a candidate for governor to have been a resident of the state for the previous 'seven years.

Long said the payment was apparently tendered for taxes due 1940 on 1939 income. He asserted that interest on this sum would amount to $270.17 and added he has discretion under the Jaw to assess a penalty of $5 a day for delinquency. He computed that such a penalty would total $110,000, leaving Denfeld owing the state $111,239.39 if he persists in claiming Massachusetts residence. Under Service Men's Law Sears retorted that Long ought to familiarize himself with provisions of the service men's tax law, under which veterans are given a leeway of six months after separation from military service before filing income tax returns. "Long would never dare contend any court that Adm.

Denfeld is. not qualified to run for governor," Sears asserted. 2 DEAD, 1 HURT IN EXPLOSION OF LOCOMOTIVE Williamsburg, Aug. 23 -The engineer and fireman of a Norfolk Western railroad frate train. were killed in an explosion of the boiler of the train's steam locomotive near here tonight.

Taylor, railroad superintendent, said at Portsmouth the cause of the explosion has not been determined. He train, east bound from Cincinnati, miles west of here, was turning a siding when the blast occurred. Why Americans are losing their freedom and what the Protestant churches can do about it is the subject of a conference here this week at Carleton college. About 50 clergymen, scientists, economists, and educators are participating in what was to have been a closed door affair.

The meeting is sponsored by Spiritual Mobilizution, which was founded 15 years ago by the Rev. Dr. James M. Fitield, minister of what is described as the largest Congregational church in Amerrica, at Los Angeles. This movement now sponsors programs over 500 radio stations, including W-G-N and a monthly magazine with a circulation of 160,000.

Scan Socialistic Programs Evolving socialistic programs in churches was considered by the conference and the facts on this subject will be filtered thru the nation by the conferees. The work of at least denominational lobby in Washington was reported to the members of the conference. Socialism in England with its regimentation and cradle to grave philosofy should be the responsibility of churches in England, according to the conferees. There have been, regional conferences under mobilization auspices, but this is the first national conference. Presbyterians, Congregationalists, Episcopalians, Unitarians, and, Disciples predominate.

Dr. Millikan Speaks Dr. Robert A. Millikan of California Institute of Technology addressed the conferees as an expert on physical science. Dr.

Alfred P. Haacke, mayor of Park Ridge, confessed converted New Deal economist, spoke as a political scientist, and Dr. Donald J. Cowling, president-emeritus of Carlton college, spoke for education. He is the founder and president of American Council on Education.

Dean Charles E. McAllister, of St. John's Episcopal cathedral, Spokane, and former rector of St. Luke's church, Evanston, spoke both as educator and theologist. Rural congregations and some of the largest city churches voiced views thru their ministers.

One important problem is how far the minister is to go in politics.
